Parks & Recreation Departmental History

The Gardendale Parks and Recreation Department was established in March 1970 to provide quality recreational facilities and programming for the community. Over the years, the department has grown significantly, adding new facilities and services to meet the evolving needs of residents.

Key milestones include:

  • 1970: Construction of the original Civic Center at 960 Main Street, marking the beginning of the department's commitment to recreational development.
  • 2001: Development of the new Civic Center Complex, providing expanded amenities for events and activities.
  • 2023: Bill Noble Park opened

The department has benefited from the leadership of four directors: Gene Cornett (1970–1975), John Brigham (1975–2005), Stan Hogeland (2005–2012), and Dale Hyche (2012–present). Each director contributed to the development and expansion of Gardendale’s recreational facilities, shaping a network that now includes parks, athletic fields, playgrounds, and landscaped public spaces.

With the addition of a beautification division in 1994 under Mayor G. William Noble, the department has also played a significant role in enhancing the city’s major roadways and public areas, a legacy continued by subsequent leadership. Today, the department’s 13 full-time and 2 part-time employees maintain high standards of service, ensuring the community enjoys first-class facilities and well-maintained public spaces.
