The Public Works Department is tasked with constructing and maintaining the City’s infrastructure, utilizing both in-house resources and contracted private firms for specific services like garbage collection and large paving projects. This hybrid approach ensures that our citizens receive top-tier services at the most cost-effective rates.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Plan Review and Inspection:
- Review plans and specifications to ensure proposed commercial and residential developments comply with all regulations and master plans.
- Inspect ongoing construction projects to guarantee adherence to these standards.
- Record Maintenance:
- Office staff maintain comprehensive records of current and past projects, including maps, underground utility information, and boundary lines.
- Traffic Control Device Maintenance:
- Maintain street markers, stop signs, and various other traffic control devices (excluding traffic lights, which are maintained by Jefferson County).
- Fleet Services:
- Mechanics in our Fleet Services division focus on maintaining and repairing equipment within the Public Works Department, specifically those not covered by the Fleet Management program with Enterprise. They handle everything from minor repairs to major overhauls.
- Litter Removal:
- Remove litter from roadways to keep our streets clean.
- Roadway Repairs:
- Repair and patch roadways, including driveway tie-ins.
- Ditch Cleaning:
- Clean ditches located on City rights-of-way to ensure proper drainage.
- Brush and Yard Debris Removal:
- Run daily routes throughout the City to pick up and haul off brush and yard debris from residential areas.
- Leaf Vacuum Service:
- Operate a leaf vacuum service daily from the beginning of November through the end of January.
- Vegetation Management:
- Apply herbicide to vegetation on City rights-of-way to control overgrowth.
- Drainage System Installation:
- Install drainage pipes, manholes, headwalls, and other necessary infrastructure to manage stormwater effectively.
- Animal Removal:
- Remove dead animals from roadways and rights-of-way to maintain public health and safety.
- Right-of-Way Maintenance:
- Mow grass and trim vegetation along City rights-of-way to ensure clear visibility and safety.
- Mosquito Control:
- Conduct mosquito spraying if the Jefferson County Health Department identifies an imminent threat of mosquito-borne illnesses.
- City-Wide Junk Cleanup:
- Organize a city-wide cleanup of large household items twice a year, with designated weeks in April and October for residents to dispose of bulky items.
